Coronavirus: Will You Comply With The Government’s Advice?
271 Answers
Whether you fall into the group classified as ‘at risk’, or are over 70 and advised to remain at home, or younger and fit but requested to abandon your social life, will you comply - and if not why not?
Me? I think we are duty bound.

Of course we will comply, as you rightly say Naomi we feel we are ALL duty bound to do so. Chillidoubt must feel like banging his head against the wall with some of the responses here. It’s not much to ask to put your social life on hold for a few months is it? Better that than catch this virus or continue the spread of it. I despair at times...

"Jim, Telling Spicerack to 'take it elsewhere' isn't up to you."
Implying someone should take racism elsewhere is up to a community as a whole, so to stomp out individuals trying to stomp out racism is just fuelling racism, really.
I'm sure deep down no one here is a racist, so lets not try act like we are, and if we are then why not go elsewhere during this time or already hardship? This thread isn't about the Chinese, would you not agree?

Why isn't it "Chinese", Jim? It originated in China and was first noticed among predominantly Chinese people in China. What's the objection to calling it Chinese? It's far more appropriate than calling the 1918 epidemic "Spanish 'flu" as that did not originate in Spain at all and Spain was not (comparatively) very hard hit. I've never heard any objections to that title, though. Why do you consider it racist to use such an adjective?

Indeed, georgesgirl, a wide spectrum of views need not be anathema.

Calling it “Chinese” is arguably not very helpful as it is only one of several :-)
I don’t think it’s racist: what is more objectionable are the occasional rants against an entire nation, so grok that point of view it’s also not helpful.
I wish the term “Coronavirus” had not stuck though. That’s also a generic term.

Let's all try to calm down a little bit. I understand that during these challenging times emotions may run high, but please let's respect the severity of the situation and remember what is important. Please try to moderate your tone and language. If referring to COVID-19 as the "Chinese virus" is deemed contentious, then it infringes the Site Rules.
