Our tradition of free speech is threatened by a growing trend find within it reasons to be offended where no offence was ever intended.
Such offence is manufactured, and validated by a subjective redefinition of meaning.
Surely this trend has its roots in post modernism and relativism, where any word or phrase can be deemed to be offensive when no offence was ever intended.
Will this idea ever be challenged successfully to reinstate the value and protection of free speech as it has always be understood?

Ah, now we get to the truth.

Answerbank is a site funded by advertising, a money making (I presume, given its longevity) venture. To use such a site FOC means that there has to be moderation and censorship.
When you play sport, you do so in the knowledge that the referee’s decision is final. When you use Answerbank, you do so in the knowledge that there is moderation.
AB is only one of many where the removal of comments has got absolutely nothing to do with advertising and commercialism. And you know it Zacs.
I stand by what I said, the main thing being that lots of people these days think they have the right to be offended by someones' comments. Advertising has absolutely nothing to with that. Whatever website is referred to.
10CS, you have a history of moaning on this subject. Maybe you should leave if it’s not what you want?

Z-M - "But that’s not stopping free speech is it?"

Does your 'FOC' sand for free of charge ?

Free of charge but not free of deletion ?
The irony of course is that it is precisely the fact that we have more “freedom of speech” than ever that these issues arise.
In some countries you’d never get that far ...
Exactly, Ich. Both the OP and later comments conveniently ignore this.
SevenOP, I covered why things are deleted in my 09:26 post.
//In some countries you’d never get that far ... //

That's irrelevant. We're not in 'some countries'. We're in a country that claims to champion free speech - but doesn't.
"The irony of course is that it is precisely the fact that we have more “freedom of speech” than ever that these issues arise. "

We haven't 'more' “freedom of speech”, we have more areas to express “freedom of speech”.

"In some countries you’d never get that far ..."

Academic, the reference is our country, past and present

"SevenOP, I covered why things are deleted in my 09:26 post."

Yes I fully understood what you posted ZM @ 09:26, free speech is limited and controlled on this forum.I accept that.

... and here we are discussing it.
Irony of ironies.
Some of us here I don’t doubt would, from a safe distance of course, champion some of those other places.
It’s very relevant
‘ We haven't 'more' “freedom of speech”, we have more areas to express “freedom of speech”.‘

And the vast majority of it stays in place. For a looooong time.

How anyone outside a communist country can complain about freedom of speech is beyond me.
Everyone has their own line that they draw as to what should be allowed. Be it an employer, AB, a pets ok expressing their opinion in Twitter. Whatever.
That is not the same thing as suppression of free speech.
"How anyone outside a communist country can complain about freedom of speech is beyond me."

You might be unaware of such topics as inquiring about 'the Holocaust' and even 5G and vaccine debates Z-M, then ? ( leaving Israeli policy out of it, of course )
The very fact that you can mention those subjects on the Internet demonstrates that you have freedom of speech. Try doing that in a communist country. Even countries like Turkey limit access to the internet, you can’t access Wikipedia there, for instance.
yawn
Limiting access to the internet might limit access to information (good and bad information ) it does not equate to limiting freedom of speech.

Neither you nor I know what we can say in a communist country regarding 5G, the Holocaust or vaccines so please do not pretend otherwise Zacs-Master.
7Op, it was you who first mentioned those subjects in some sort of weird effort to back up your claims about free speech. Don’t now say it’s daft to mention them because we don’t know whether they can be discussed or not!

Limiting access to the Internet means limiting access to social media. I was hoping you’d be able to make the connection rather than me having to explain.
\\That's irrelevant. We're not in 'some countries'. We're in a country that claims to champion free speech - but doesn't.\\

o god there will be no freedom of speech in this country until there is a law that says - "Naomi can say absolitely what she likes but no one else can of course". this allows our heroine to kick the crap out of anyone and everyone whilst screaming that she is being harassed

Naomi I dont hear you defend my right to address you as .....
rhymes with ...... PP lets out a little regretful sigh

and I have even be censored in my delightful little frou-frous about you innit? er recalling previous posts, and then mercilessly ridiculing comments you made previrously that are inconsistent with todays view? someone is skewering them

γνῶθι σεαυτόν as they say er abroad - c'est la vie old girl !
// How anyone outside a communist country can complain about freedom of speech is beyond me.//

right - Srb - that is Serbian for Serbia

a co-worker ( put on heavy Roshan acks-scent) lifft in Serbia being Serbian. The Serbian catholic church was banned then and so they had to pray in secret(*). The Christians used their own houses for services and one day the police heard the service was at her fathers house

(*) we looked incredulous at this point

he went to preezon of course - blimey

and here we are earnestly discussing whether Noami should be free to say that MMR is a loada crap - or even free to say she said it and then she didnt! There's consistency for you !

people wiser than me have commented that the lock darn would change our points of view and view of Life
Stop it with The childish feud with Naomi, PP.
