If they don't contribute then they shouldn't have a say where council tax money is spent.

TTT, the fact is that 99% of people get to where they are by their own endeavour or indeed lack of it.
"How can that be right - getting a rebate on something you don't pay ?"

If someone doesn't pay Council Tax because they are in receipt of certain benefits for example, there is an underlying liability to pay it still.

If their circumstances changed and the benefit stopped, the rate of payable Council Tax would be looked at again.

It's the liability that is considered for the £150 payment, not whether it's actually being paid or no.
The Community Charge was by far the fairest system.

As it stands a couple with kids, one of whom may not work, could be paying the same as their next door neighbour who may have six working adults living there. Please, can somebody explain to me, how Council Tax is a better/fairer system than each adult having to contribute?
That liability is reviewed every year.
ken: "TTT, the fact is that 99% of people get to where they are by their own endeavour or indeed lack of it. " - yeah but that doesn't mean people should not care about anyone else or indeed society generally.
DD 12:43, bang on, over to you ken.
If your house is above Band D, you don't get the £150 rebate. And before somebody suggests it, just because you are in a bigger house etc, you are not necessarily particularly well off - a couple of pensioners, for example, whose family has moved on.
The idea of everbody pays their share is great, provided that is linked to ability to pay, and neither poll tax or council tax, or the old rates system really did that.
TTT, Society? There is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families.
ken: what about the infrastructure of democracy Law and order, etc that we all live by? Do you live outside of all of that?
Of course not. Why do you ask?
so you are part of society then though you say there is no such thing. A bit of a juxtaposition?

I was quoting someone you greatly admire, TTT;

Don't know what happened there?
yes I am well aware of TGL's view on the matter and would ask her the same questions. Though I think I know what she meant.
Breathtaking, absolutely breathtaking.
What is TGL? I’ve seen it on this forum a couple of times.
I believe she meant dog eat dog, TTT.

Do you really expect me to believe that when you go to the polling station to cast your vote, you are considering what is best for the guy who empties your bins, the woman on the supermarket check-out, the lollipop lady outside the school, et al? You vote Tory because they are the ones who will always look after your interests given your income must be fairly decent if what you say you do for a living is true. And, before you jump in all guns blazing, i'm not suggesting it isn't true.
> Is It Fair That Those Who Pay No Council Tax For Whatever Reason Should Get A Vote In Tomorrow's Local Election?

Yep, the fairest way of doing it.

> If they don't contribute then they shouldn't have a say where council tax money is spent.

Then if they contribute more than you, should they have more of a say than you where council tax money is spent?

In other words, if you have a problem with people who pay less than you, do you think people who pay more than you should have a problem with you?
I quite agree - if husband pays the tax, wife should not have a vote and vice versa
ken: "I believe she meant dog eat dog, TTT." - no she did not, she meant that we should all provide for ourselves and not rely on the state. She also said that the state should be as small as possible.

"Do you really expect me to believe that when you go to the polling station to cast your vote, you are considering what is best for the guy who empties your bins, the woman on the supermarket check-out, the lollipop lady outside the school, et al?" - I vote Tory because they are the most likely to deliver the best society for all of those things. I don't think socialism can work and Labour et al hang on to that.

"You vote Tory because they are the ones who will always look after your interests given your income must be fairly decent if what you say you do for a living is true. And, before you jump in all guns blazing, i'm not suggesting it isn't true. " - I vote Tory because there is no choice for any rational person. As Labour have been in power for approx 30 years out of 120, the country mostly agrees with me. When the last real Labour government left office in 1979, the basic rate of income tax was 33%, poor people pay most of the direct taxation. Labour are the enemy of the working man and poor people generally. The Lib non dems are totally clueless, thus I have no choice in how I vote.
