Why Do Americans Generally Look Older Than British People?

So my grandma watches judge Judy a lot and a common theme I have noticed is that the people who come on the show look way older than their actual age. For example when the plaintiff and defendant are entering court it’ll say “19 year old….is suing…”, but the 19 year old looks in their late twenties. I notice that a lot. Whereas most British people tend to look round their age.

don't forget JJ is about 20 years old. in the same way that 19 year olds in the 50's look older to our eyes, thus do 20 year olds from 20 years ago

Bednobs- these episodes weren’t because Judy was asking them for dates when things happened and they were saying 2013/14 etc

that's still nearly 10 years ago. fashions change, hairstyles change, make up changes
I don't think you can make a geralisation from 1 single source - if you had watched "real housewives of..." instead, you would conclude that Americans generally look younger than their actual ages because all of the 50/60 year olds on there look 30/40!

Bednobs- yeah that’s because those real housewives women are the type of women that spend thousands of dollars having surgeries and Botox etc. Taking into consideration what you said about it being 10 years ago, if I was to look back at photos of myself and friends back then, we all still looked our age facially. I’m not talking about fashion trends, I’m just talking about facially, you look at someone’s face and they look a certain age. Well a lot of the people on the show facially look way more mature than a person of their age

I've never watched Judge Judy, but I'm making an assumption here regarding what class these folks are...probably lower middle...or lower. How they look age-wise is a reflection of how they live...diet, smoking, drugs possibly. Same as here.

I don't think that the programme's age is a factor, we've always said this about JJ and in the US we occasionally saw some very current episodes. It seems especially true of young men in their 20s, many would easily pass for 40+!

That's odd. As a US citizen, I've always thought the reverse. We get a lot of British TV productions here in the US (they make some good ones). I guess that "beauty" is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

PS. I've watched a lot of Judge Judy. Production of that program ended a year or so ago. They're all reruns now. However, she has a new program called Judy Justice, but it's not on TV.

Brian, I belong to a group of twelve women. Two Brits, nine Irish and one American.
The only one who looks a bit older than her years is the American who spends half the year in California.
The sun causes skin to age. Not a problem in Ireland although with the rain we've been having of late our skin will be shrivelled and wrinkled by Christmas. :-(

A generalisation of course as there are many in the US who can easily pass for human. :-)
