Islam, is it compatible with western society?

Bearing in mind some of the statements made by Muslims on this site, relating to their attitudes to women and brutal punishment (mostly of women) for cultural misdemeanours, is Islam in it's present state a religion compatible with a modern liberal society ?

It is not compatible with western Society because of the different customs.
As one tiny example.... Muslim women walk about in western Society with head covering unhindered. What happens when a western woman tries walking with an uncovered head in a mostly Islam country.
Don't get me wrong, woman should be allowed to wear what they like in the UK, it is a pity that this courtesy is not afforded to western women in the Middle East.

Sith, the only people here who say that are those who avoid my questions because the answers are too close to the truth for comfort - and that's exactly what you do. I've never claimed to know everything - in fact there's much I don't know - but unlike you, where your religion is concerned, I don't hide from stark reality - I acknowledge the truth.
here they agree with you:

for me as said in the very first post, it is very much dependant upon the branch and the individual islamic aspiration. there are many elements of islam that don't sit in the 21st century, let alone a modern western society.
most mulsims who i have dealings with have moulded their islamism around western culture, rathern than the other way round. although i am sure there are many who hold on to the ancient beliefs and traditions and cannot move out of the 5th century even though they absorb all the best bits or attractive vices of our culture (especially the wealthy ones who like drinking and gambling).
so is it compable: yes and no. but i won't go so far as towing the bnp line.

Ankou, despite your insinuation, no one has suggested toeing the BNP line. However, the mere fact that they are the BNP doesn't invalidate some of their observations.
I suppose in answering this question we have to ask why specifically Islam? Why not Judaism, or Buddhism, or Sikhism, or Shinto, or any other religion? The answer can only come from the practices and beliefs of some of the followers of Islam itself. In recent weeks we've seen one or two extremely unsavoury reports, one in particular from an Islamic women's group, so this question is actually very pertinent to the future integration and cohesion of our society.
