Islam, is it compatible with western society?

Bearing in mind some of the statements made by Muslims on this site, relating to their attitudes to women and brutal punishment (mostly of women) for cultural misdemeanours, is Islam in it's present state a religion compatible with a modern liberal society ?

I suspect, like most religions, it depends on how fanatical or liberal the form of religion is that you are considering.

Simply, no.

For me the Muslim faith exists in the dark ages and is incompatible with the modern west. Where it exists in society in other countries that's their decision to make but in our society it doesn't fit.

Take a look at some of the Extremist Christians in the US. They are not compatible with Western society either - or what about the Catholic exorcist who was recently quoted regarding yoga and satanism.

What is WSoc ? Lewd behaviour, dress/drugs, alcohol/free sex, same gender coupling etc. WSoc gives us freedom to participate in above or join a like-minded religion/sect be it Islam/Amish/Judism/JW/Sikhism etc ?

All religions/sects in WS must abide laws, (initially based on christian tenets), that includes Islamists in WS. Sharia isn't acknowledged by High Court.

The misdemeanours of Christian extremists in the US, or others elsewhere, do not negate those of Islamic extremists in the UK, and that is what this question relates to. No, it is not a religion that is compatible with a modern liberal society, because despite our laws, cultural 'misdemeanours', emanating directly from Islam, continue.

Not directly, but in the interests of balance, it should be pointed out that most of the major religions of the world suffer exactly the same problems.

I believe the original question relates to forced marriages, the subjugation and mutilation of women, etc, etc, so it is not true to say that most of the major religions of the world suffer the same problems. They don't.

Tambo. I don't know where you live but it seems to be a libertine rather than liberal society. It isn't like that here just ploughing, eating, sowing, drinking, harvesting, hunting, then ploughing again, oh and children appear.

I don't believe anyone's suggested getting rid of Islam, rather that Islam rids itself of its uncivilised and barbaric practices.

The other religions are not so insular as Islam, and dont teach to hate the "kaffirs" that they have chosen to live with.

islam is a religion, it is not the religion which is bad, it is a particular small group in the religion that get caught on the media and send a message that all muslims are like this. this is not correct. most muslims are good, pace loving and kind people but these ones are never ever sown on the media. i wonder why?

I think Christianity took a wrong turn when it abandoned the discipline and control that Islam still clearly has over its followers.
The austere perfection of life in Saudi, for example, is something to be admired.
But, having said that, I believe Islam and our decadent Western Society make strange bedfellows.
