>>god didnt come from anywhere...thats why hes called god.<<

Only a true and gullible believer could have written that :))
Sith, your statement is either profound or naive, would you care to elucidate so that we can ascertain which it is.
Mymom, why do you assume that your understanding of the bible exceeds Birdie's, or the Pope's, or the Archbishop of Canterbury's - or mine? We've all studied the bible.

Incidentally, your God does have another name - 'Jealous'.

'Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.' Exodus 34:14

Mynom >>But of course – you don’t have an open mind.<< why would you think Atheists dont have an open mind, we usually do have open minds, that is how we reach the conclusion that there is no God, unlike Theists who could not could net even conceive the idea that their God is merely a fairy story.
Ratter: Beg to differ there. I looked and questioned long and hard before I came to my decision. I could not accept a god of love could have a hell fire, especially after my nan died and she was a good hearted loving woman who was also god-fearing. I questioned religion. But I have spoken to a couple of atheists who were brought up as atheists and they have never questioned why.
Naomi: There is study and study. I have looked at the religious leaders interpretations of the Bible and that is why there is so much greed and disension among religions - why religions cause wars and participate in genocide. Not because of the Bible. But because they can't accept another person is equal regardless of colour of skin or culture. Or because of greed. You only have to see how the catholic church is so rich and yet its adherents are so poor.
One day, these religious leaders will be called to account. Look at the religious leaders at the time of Jesus. Look at the priests prior to Jesus. God condemned them then because of their attitude. It is no different today. I spoke with a lady from Australia the other day. She was one of those 'so-called' orphans shipped out to Australia in the 50's. It was catholic priests and nuns who did the abuse etc.
BTW here it is where study comes into play. He is jealous not because of his name, but because as the Almighty worship belongs to him and not to idols made of wood and stone.
Any one can take texts and use them for their own interpretation. You need to take the Bible as a whole.
Beso: I have faith. I also have an open mind. You prove to me without doubt at all, that life and the universe came by chance. I will listen, I will read and if the evidence is there, I will believe you. But for the past 30 years, I have read books on creation, on science and evolution. I have watched videos and listened to talks and lectures, I have as yet found no reason to change my mind. See if you can!!
I'm to work now, so I will be off line until tomorrow. Bye bye all!!
The idea that the bad things doen by religion is a matter of misuse is ridiculous. Explicit, brutal genocide is central to the earliest stories in the Bible.

The concept that the Bbile must be "taken as a whole" is irrational. It is a collection of stories, many of them extremely offensive and promoting fascist attitudes.

Taking the Bible as a whole is about blind faith and ignoring the obvious malevoence it encompasses.
I don't expect to change your mind mymom. You have proven yourself profoundly irrational and deeply prejudiced.
ok thanks MyMom, I honestly wasn't aware that god's name was Jehovah.
Perhaps you could enlighten me further on how we know he's called Jehovah.
Did he introduce himself to someone? This is where my problem lies, there's so much in the bible that seems so very far fetched.
The idea of a greater being outside of our universe is something I'd never rule out, because, of course, there's no way I'd ever know, but in claiming that the creator of the Universe, in it's tremendous enormity, should pick humans as his universal representatives and give us a little book to guide us on how we should live, is a bit vain of us really, isn't it?
Mymom, actually, I think your assumption that the quality of my studies falls below the quality of yours is rather rude. However, overlooking that, I too have looked at religious leaders' interpretations of the bible and I disagree with all of them - just as I disagree with yours - because you, like them, use the texts, as you say, for your 'own interpretation'. You are all the same.

If you looked at the bible with a mind unfettered by pre-conceived expectation, you would know that it fails to bear out the claims made by religion and it is, to say the least, contradictory. Therefore it is impossible for any rational being to take it as a whole.

As for your request to Beso to prove beyond doubt that all life in the universe came about by chance, your answer carries no evidence whatsoever, so why attribute the unknown to the unknown? Where's the rationality in that?

Since you clearly dismiss the beliefs of other people of religion, to quote Stephen Roberts, “I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
God can only have come from a Big Bang of some sort - can we look for the God particle?
In the sea ,oh sorry I thought you said COD which kind of fits in with some answers Battersea ,depends how you like your fish I suppose.
I found it amusing to read a quote here from the bible that god did not want people to 'worship other gods'. That surely admits that other gods exist, or was it not worded properly ? Perhaps it should have said 'Thou shalt not worship any putative, supposed or imaginary gods but me as you would be wasting your time as they don't really exist (I cannot of course prove that as it is not possible to prove the absence of anything, you will just have to believe me(and not those others who say the same(well they would wouldn't they))). I could do a rewrite of the bible but to cover the legal side avoid ambiguity and make it consisent within itself it might take a while and be about 10 times the current size.
On the other hand ...who needs it?
-- answer removed --
Mymom does actually have an open mind. Unfortunately the first thing that happened was their ability to think logically escaped leaving a vacuum for the doctrine to fill.
your main argument is that you need evidence. Believing in god is about faith. Religion is faith. i mean, you may say you have evidence that the big bang is real. but who created it than? an explosion cannot happen by itself.

Sith, you really don't understand Atheism do you, it is about a non belief, Ive not seen an atheist claim the big bang theory is true, what Atheists claim is that "we don't know how the world came about and believe that the big bang theory is far more likely than your invisible man in the sky "God" that has come from nowhere, now that is just plain silly and unbelievable to any free thinking person!!
