How pathetic are the church? They tried to pull The Bible out and now they are referring to a dictionary.

Why can't they just admit that they are scared that this will diminish their already waning power? The church does not own the word 'marriage', the taxpayer owns this word and most taxpayers rightly do not care a jot about who gets 'married', let alone whether they are the same sex or not.

The only reason I care is that to my mind it is another nail in the coffin of religion. All thoughts welcome!

No I happen to think she believes what is actually written down in the Bible.
You reckon?? lol
Ann, //No I happen to think she [the queen] believes what is actually written down in the Bible.//

You don’t, so why assume she does?

//can't see her liking the thought of gay marriage in church one little bit //

Why? Because you don't? What happened to 'Judge not lest ye be judged'?
I will say this only once, I do believe what is written in the Bible and I know what I believe in relation to my own faith, but I do not want to enter into slanging matches, I try to keep friendly with everyone but obviously like everyone else in life I am entitled to my personal opinion.
Andy I couldn't agree more. I just don't get it really, at least as far as christianity is concerned, doesn't it say "judge and ye shall be judged".

I didn't want to get married in a church anyway, it would have been hypocritical of me but if you adhere to the church don't you agree, de facto, to the heirachy? After all the pope ensures than millions of children are born in poverty.

If gay people want to marry outside the church what has it got to do with the church? Am I being dense? Obviously if your a gay christian it may cause heavy concern.
Of course you are, Ann.

As are the Bishops and Archbishops, the Imams and the Rabbis.........

But *none* of the above have any claim on the institution which is Marriage.
Ann, //I will say this only once, I do believe what is written in the Bible//

And I say again, you don’t. So what did happen to ‘judge not lest ye be judged’?
i have had a very interesting time reading this post. However, no matter how carefully worded, eloquent and logical and arguement is presented, you still wont convince those for it to turn against it, and you wont convince those against it to change their minds. Ever.
Bedknobs This isn't about religion per se, its about intolorence and bigotry. I would alwys hope you could change the mind of such people.

The church have tried to construct an argument based on belief but it isn't its small minded politics.
Dave, //I would alwys hope you could change the mind of such people.//

Changing the minds of the ‘holier than thou’ would be a feat indeed.
Divorced? The Church of England refused me a marriage because my wife and I were divorced. The Roman Catholic church would marry us because it didn't regard us as ever having been married, since we had each been married in protestant churches before; only snag was I would have to convert to Catholicism!
Given that standard of 'logic', I'm not surprised at the Churches making a fuss over something which doesn't directly affect them viz. what formal word we use for civil partnership ! If most people call it 'marriage' regardless of the legal term, which in due course they will, for convenience and ease, the Churches will have to get angry at dictionary compilers who import that usage into works.
The churches are not under compulsion to marry anyone. What they call the procedure is for them but to condemn the usage of marriage for something which in law is identical to marriage in everything but the legal name is just silly. If they objected to the fact of 'civil partnership', that, at least, would have something more weighty as an argument, but they lost any battle there. They may call their service 'holy marriage', if they wish; a natural process in language exemplified by 'acoustic guitar' for 'guitar'.!
dave i disagree - i think internet posts are very unlikely to change the mind of anyone.
Fred, similarly, I fail to see the logic in a church refusing to marry divorcees, and yet offering to ‘bless’ the union after such couples have been married in a civil ceremony. Blessing something which it deems should never be smacks of the greatest hypocrisy - but then where religion is concerned, hypocrisy is par for the course.
naomi24 - where is the logic where a priest may not marry, but a married man may become a priest?
Andy-hughes, where is the logic? No idea.
bedknobs I think you will find that a number of ABers have changed there view of all sorts of things due to the dialogue on here.

Sometimes the internet is a far more honest place than TRW even if it is also more aggresive.
What's TRW?
Yep...I've certainly changed my mind on many subjects. Including religion.
twr= the real world
Thanks bednobs. I never know what all these funny initials mean.
