How pathetic are the church? They tried to pull The Bible out and now they are referring to a dictionary.

Why can't they just admit that they are scared that this will diminish their already waning power? The church does not own the word 'marriage', the taxpayer owns this word and most taxpayers rightly do not care a jot about who gets 'married', let alone whether they are the same sex or not.
The only reason I care is that to my mind it is another nail in the coffin of religion. All thoughts welcome!

I didn't want to get married in a church anyway, it would have been hypocritical of me but if you adhere to the church don't you agree, de facto, to the heirachy? After all the pope ensures than millions of children are born in poverty.
If gay people want to marry outside the church what has it got to do with the church? Am I being dense? Obviously if your a gay christian it may cause heavy concern.

Divorced? The Church of England refused me a marriage because my wife and I were divorced. The Roman Catholic church would marry us because it didn't regard us as ever having been married, since we had each been married in protestant churches before; only snag was I would have to convert to Catholicism!
Given that standard of 'logic', I'm not surprised at the Churches making a fuss over something which doesn't directly affect them viz. what formal word we use for civil partnership ! If most people call it 'marriage' regardless of the legal term, which in due course they will, for convenience and ease, the Churches will have to get angry at dictionary compilers who import that usage into works.
The churches are not under compulsion to marry anyone. What they call the procedure is for them but to condemn the usage of marriage for something which in law is identical to marriage in everything but the legal name is just silly. If they objected to the fact of 'civil partnership', that, at least, would have something more weighty as an argument, but they lost any battle there. They may call their service 'holy marriage', if they wish; a natural process in language exemplified by 'acoustic guitar' for 'guitar'.!

Fred, similarly, I fail to see the logic in a church refusing to marry divorcees, and yet offering to ‘bless’ the union after such couples have been married in a civil ceremony. Blessing something which it deems should never be smacks of the greatest hypocrisy - but then where religion is concerned, hypocrisy is par for the course.
