I would imagine my 'so called' Muslim friend knows every bit as much about Islam as you do keyplus since you are also a 'so called' Muslim, but I'll do better than quote him, I'll ask him to join then he and you can have nice little chats- straight from the horses mouth so to speak. He's a very liberal very intelligent man whose wife is a barrister so don't expect much change from him if he does, he thought the majority of what you were saying was exactly the sort of stance that is causing so much disharmony and that you really weren't the best ambassador for Islam he could think of.
So, these lady nobel prize winners Keyplus- how many are Muslim and how many are Jewish I wonder- that might be an interesting statistic.

Father Ted – You are asking me to give you a simple answer to your question but right in the beginning I ask you a very simple question that are you talking about the religion or the followers. And you haven’t answered that. Because if you are talking about religions (teachings) then I will give you a very deep insight into all of the religions treatment for women. However if you are talking about the followers then answer is very simple. That there are black sheep everywhere. Otherwise I think you know what answer you want to hear and I have made you happy by giving you that answer long time ago. After all I do like making people happy.

I would not be able to be muslim as my husband could have more wives if I could not give him children, were not interested in sleeping with him or were disagreable. He could have up to four and i would have to get on with the other 3.

Nox – I would love to know about my comments your “liberal and very intelligent” friend did not agree with. Anyway what do you call liberal? What does he do to be awarded a title of liberal? I would love to have a word with you liberal and intelligent friend. I may learn something. Any don’t confuse two threads. Nobel prize is on the other one. Or have I asked for a bit too much and as a result have confused you?

Rosamundjohn – What if your husband had four other mistresses? After all there is no law stopping a man from that in this country. And mistresses are usually unknown to wives. At least in the case of other wives you would be aware of them. Or you would not like another wife for him but woudn't give a damn about a mistress. Is that so?

It seems I did not word my question clearly enough, by religion I meant a belief system which determines the behaviour of its followers, and the resulting deeds of the followers. A theoretical religion could advocate extreme sexual discrimination but if it had no followers it would not have a record. I hope that is clear. Keyplus you do not need to defend Islam, just nominate which religion you think has the worst record for sexual discrimination and if possible give the reasons for your nomination. If you wish to have prolonged arguments with other contributors please start a thread of your own for that purpose. Thankyou.

The practice of polygamy is sanctioned in some cultures, but only when the husband is able to support each of the wives in the same manner, e.g. a household each or their own rooms in a large house. It's got nothing to do with having children or sleeping with him, it's his choice, but he must be scrupulously fair to each of the wives. Many wives find it pleasing, it gives them other ladies of the household to socialise with and there is mutual looking after any children.

Sith, I haven't actually seen a straight answer from you, but you have talked about Hindu women throwing themselves onto their husband's funeral pyre - a practice that is outlawed, and one that very rarely occurs - so I assume you're nominating Hinduism. If you are, then can you explain your reasons for that nomination?

boxy, you don't really believe that surely, that women whatever their culture would be happy and in agreement with their husbands having another wife or two, that it takes the burden off them, and they can share the child rearing, care. Everything i have read says to the contrary of your statement, that often the first wife gets discarded effectively, that once she is too old to bear children then is more or less put aside, and that jealousy is no different with these women than it would be in western society. Polygamy only truly suits men, in whatever society.

exactly my point naomi, you have not seen a straight answer from me? nor have i from you. all you do is critisice. i have said over 3 times now that it is not the religion that is sexist, but some of the people within the religion. If that cannot sink in to you, than look at it like this. is the whole of Britain sexist, or racist or whatever? no, only some are. i am seriously laughing at how this basic point is not sinking in. seriously.
