When people, especially the young, fall foul of unavoidable diseases and die, the religious often justify the loss by saying “It’s God’s will”, and yet when asked why they think a loving God would have willed that disease on the victim, they say “It’s not God’s fault”. How does that work?

Because you people do not understand or believe in the meanings and purpose of this life as people who believe in God do, nor you believe the meanings and importance of the life hereafter and that is the reason I said that you would not understand. As for the logic, I have much experience about your so called logic and know very well that it does not go beyond your nose.
But one thing is sure that just as existence (or Nonexistence) of God does not let you have a peaceful mind same situation is here. Most of your atheist friends said what they usually say. Why are you worried about something that according to you does not exist? And it is true. If I am sure that something does not exist then I would not waste my time (and this much time) on that. But this is something called peace of mind and it only comes with faith.

Speaking of "willed that disease on the victim" I am always bugged about the way that God is given the het out of jail free card when it comes to creation of diseases and/or disease causing organisms.
The knee-jerk response is to blame them on the devil but that makes the mistake of crediting a second being (equally mythical afaic) with the deity-level powers of creation. Oops!
I've posted a link to the relevant Monty Python song before and won't trouble you with it again.
In short: it's all God's handiwork. Sorry about that but there were
only meant to be two humans to keep him company except, via some icky incestuous process which the bible neatly sidesteps, they ended up multiplying. On the eight day he created pestilence, to keep our numbers in check.
There's nice of him. :-/

But why is your God not protecting all those totally innocent little children in Gaza Khandro ? If he loves us so much, as we are constantly being told by Christians, where is he when we need him ?
Could it be that he doesn't exist in the first place perhaps ?
Wise up yourself !
And if you don't understand by now that the blood-stained hands of the God of Abraham is all over Gaza, as Naomi has said, than its unlikely that you will ever understand.
"Suffer little children to come unto me"....remember that one ? Well, that is coming true in spades now hasn't it ?
