I would define it as an absence of belief - hence nothing to expand upon.
Perhaps you would struggle to expand on that, but I don't;
'A belief that there is no God', is not what you said of yourself.
Go ahead, Khandro. Expand on it then.
Khandro - //Perhaps you would struggle to expand on that, but I don't;

And therein lies the fundamental difference between us -

You as a Christian take it upon yourself you 'educate' unbelievers like me because you believe I would be a better person if I believed like you do, and all I need is the wisdom you are desperate to pass on to me.

I, as an atheist, never even consider trying to persuade people to see the world as I do, because frankly, I couldn't care less if anyone believes of not.
Unfortunately the video only addresses the issue of god, it fails to address the issue of all the other gods.

Other gods?

OTHER GODS??????

What are you saying?

Wait until the Christian evangelists on here read that!!!
/The dictionary definition of atheism is - 'A belief that there is no God'./

Perhaps 'a lack of belief in god' would be more a accurate definition, since no belief is involved.

That's certainly how I see it - to me, atheism is the absence of a belief that there is God, rather than the belief that there is no God.

It's a matter of semantics, but I still think it's important.

I prefer not burden myself with any belief system, it makes me far happier.
Andy, we only have god's word that he is the only god, I think the other gods would disagree with that assertion and by their very existence prove the lie..

Nicely put - put the factor that all deities have in common is their universal shyness - their unwillingness to reveal themselves to anyone by any sign.

It does put something of a serious strain on even the most basic belief system - which is why I remain delighted not to have one.
And they said atheism was simple and already they're bickering!

So is it;
"There is no God",
"I do not believe in God"
"There are no Gods"
"I do not believe there are Gods"
"There probably are no Gods/ but there may be a God" and vice versa etc. etc.

Yawn!

Oh I forgot to add naomi's "absence of belief", (whatever that is).

Do you really need to have it explained Khandro? ...
Absence is the lack of presence...
Belief is the acceptance of unverified assertions
You see it is easy really.

Given five minutes, any of the atheists mentioned, or any other, would have walked away bored from the 'definition' of their lack of belief.

Contrast that with the book you have to wade through, and try to live by every minute of every day, for the rest of your life, when the world around you continues to demonstrate beyond doubt that your 'loving' God is not really giving a hoot.

Who do you think is spending their time better?
I both believe that there are no unicorns....and have a lack of belief in unicorns.

Perhaps Khandro could explain how that is not simple and how I can expand it further?

jack - ironically, given the existence of the narwhal - there is far more visible evidence that has fed the myth of the unicorn, than there is of the myths that feed a belief in any higher unseen deity of any description!

You cannot self-define as one who has "absence of belief", - absence of belief in what?

See J the H's entry above. Clue; 'Unicorn'

The problem here is, you are a Christian, so this sort of thing matters to you - a lot.

We are atheists and we honestly couldn't care less!!

That comes as a surprise considering how many of you hang out on 'Religion and Spiritualty'.
Also you have a rather simplistic and narrow view of what religion is. I get everyday posts from Christian, Buddhist, Muslim and a variety of other assorted religious groups. One I received today covers quite a range of topics from the infallibility (or otherwise) of the Pope, to male on male anal sex;

Wow - no-one could accuse you of not knowing how to have a good time!!
Khandro, //absence of belief in what?//

The bit of the word ‘atheist’ that says ‘theist’ gives it away. Absence of belief in supernatural gods. Simple logic really.
