It was only when I started to think for myself that I broke away from Christianity and realised that I had my own mind, and I didn't (couldn't?) take the word of others as been 'gospel'.

Just for the record, I don't hate Christians but I do love reason and honesty.

There are many difficult passages in the Bible.
Does every new convert to Christianity have to be a complete expert on all of them?
Fortunately, there are many people and institutions who have spent many years studying these passages, and give us explanations that do not contravene our belief in a loving God.
It is a simple enough process to type into the Internet your awkward question, and then follow the links to the expert answers.

I think the mistake made by some evangelical and other cults is to assume that the Bible is the literal word of God when in fact it is at best the divinely-inspired collection of writings of mere mortals. Adopting this viewpoint enables you to reassess the contents more profitably.
