Pardon the pun, but playing devils advocate here. Are the atheists and non-religious who contribute to R&S (and I'm including myself in this) sometimes a bit too quick to condemn, criticise and type ad hominem remarks in response to religious posts?

R&S section (just like news) seems to bring out the worst in people. We all have opinions but wouldn't it be better to try and have a reasoned and *rational* discussion rather than some of the heated exchanges that so often happens?

As I said, I'm including myself in this as sometimes Ive been a bit hasty replying, with some off the cuff remarks that I may not have made in a real life situation.

Theland @ 22:44
//Nailit - put your other brain cell on line, and understand.
I never post anything that I have not watched
You got that? Really?
Now you can apologise//

Theland previously @ 19:53
//I shall try to watch them and then just write up the evidence//

I shall try to watch them???
Why shall you try to watch them if you already have?
“If there were no God, there would be no atheists.”

G.K. Chesterton
Khandro, why on earth do you admire that tripe? In the realm of philosophy that man really was an absolute plank.
n. G.K. Chesterton had one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.
Nailit - Why do you forensically dissect every word or phrase I use, in order to criticise me, instead of taking what I say in context and understanding my meaning?
You really do have an ego that needs a rub don't you?
Question Author
I've got something that could do with a rub but it aint my ego Theland!
Khandro, //G.K. Chesterton had one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.//

Rubbish. “If there were no God, there would be no atheists”, implies that God is an irrefutable reality which is clearly abject nonsense - and utterly irrational is his other oft quoted deliberation, “When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything.” If that’s one of the greatest minds, ‘God’ save us from it!
n. I see G.K.C. is too profound for you. Both of those assertions made by him stand up to close scrutiny, but you flit over them without much thought.
How could "atheism" exist without "God" ?
Khandro, //How could "atheism" exist without "God" ? //

Atheism wouldn’t exist without the ‘concept’ of God. Let me know if that’s too profound for you and if necessary I’ll elaborate.
n. That would hinge on the fact that you believe God is a concept - many people don't.
"We all have opinions but wouldn't it be better to try and have a reasoned and *rational* discussion rather than some of the heated exchanges that so often happens? "

"Ive tried to use reason and its been like banging my head against the wall "

"Tried to rationalise with religionists before (in real life) and it just seems like a waste of oxygen."

"you deserve to be ridiculed. What a dufus!"

Seems a bit loaded this one. Bit ad hominem?
Khandro, //n. That would hinge on the fact that you believe God is a concept - many people don't.//

Not necessarily. That God is a concept in the minds of others is undeniable.
Question Author
Spath,
//Seems a bit loaded this one. Bit ad hominem?//
As regards my calling Theland a dufus, yes it was an ad hominem remark and I regret saying it (indeed, I will apologise to Theland for saying it)
but as regards your other C&P of my remarks, then I fail to see how they were 'loaded' in any way.
I never realised before that my personal beliefs are actually dangerous to some?
That is the accusation.
And a daft one at that!
Question Author
//I never realised before that my personal beliefs are actually dangerous to some//
You have never realised it because they arnt!
I rarely answer religious questions because if something doesn't exist in the first place how can you argue about it. Except in an abstract manner.
Theists often quote the bible and claim it as true but are never able to prove it.
As far as they are concerned if it is written in any form in the bible 'it must be true even if the event occurred millennia before there was any life on earth.
let alone human beings.
Modeller; //As far as they [who are "they"] are concerned if it is written in any form in the bible 'it must be true even if the event occurred millennia before there was any life on earth.//

Only knuckle-dragging, cave-dwelling freaks believe the entire bible to be literally true, not even the Pope believes that - so why do you spread such rubbish, is it to show how smart you are by setting up a straw man to knock down?
I don't believe in the god Ra, but that doesn't prove he exists!
Question Author
Khandro,
Cant speak for modeller but would be interested to know which bits of the Bible that you DO find true and why?
Just how do you decide what is true and what isn't?
And, Khandro, you're being very rude to many thousands, if not millions of Americans!
