This atheist attended Fulshaw C of E primary school and attended a church service every Wednesday morning. This atheist attended two periods of RI every week at grammar school. This atheist joined Crusaders and attended for over 100 Sundays, witness my Crusader Bible and Crusader New Testament. This atheist thought deeply about religion in general and Christianity in particular and at the tender age of 17, 60 years ago, started to read more widely about the subject. It was reading Bertrand Russell's 'Why I Am Not a Christian' that changed his mind about religion. This atheist can still remember the feeling of liberation he felt when he read that book. This atheist has never wavered in his views about the existence of gods since that time.
//I can understand various believers discussing dogma and points of theology, but why post if you don't believe in anything at all?//
OK Ill give it a shot Theland.
I post because I just cant understand.
I don't understand the cruelity of the God as portrayed in the old Testament...his orders to kill and destroy women, kids, babies, men, and livestock. I don't understand his orders to destroy life....life which he created. I don't understand the concept of hell. According to the Bible, Jesus took the punishment for our sins. Except he didn't. If the punishment for sin is eternal separation from God then why isn't Jesus eternally separated from God? (taking our punishment)? A few hours pain nailed on to a cross isn't anything to shout home about. People have suffered much worse than that.
If we all deserved the pain of an eternal damnation and jesus paid the price, then Jesus would be in agony right now...but he isn't is he? So its not really a sacrifice is it?
