A Bit Of A Hiatus But Finally Done It

A bit of a hiatus (lockdown, work, personal things etc) but finally read the Bible all the way through, again!
How on earth can anybody read this mess and believe its the word of (any) God is beyond me.
Read about a 3rd of it and left of for a bit. (TBH the unrelenting slaughter was getting to me a bit) Picked up again and read whole books at a time. The contradictions alone had me questioning, never mind the bloodshed etc (That was before I got to the new Testament).
Then the New Testament accounts doent agree with each other.
I tried.
The bible is a crock.
Different books, Different authors, different theologies.

Modern church...
We'll try to reconcile them all and call it the bible...

No! I was only asking about one.

No need to be an expert on biblical history. Its a moral question.
My own (and your) answer is no, its not moral to kill your wife because she didnt bleed on the bedsheet the first time you had sex.
So why try to justify it?

Look at Nelsons navy. Dozens of lashes for the least of disciplinary offences.

The middle ages, trial by fire. Ducking in water to determine witchcraft.

Kneecapping in Northern Ireland for betraying the community.

The list is endless.

Our moral standard, or the moral standard applied and recognised by the whole nation of Israel thousands of years ago.

Its clearly an offence worthy of death according to Deuteronomy 22.

The Bible is a set of stories that meant a lot more to people around the time they were written, we now know how the hymen works and all the reasons why a virgin may not bleed on her first sexual encounter.

I am 66 and throughout my upbringing I have never been taught to act out scenes from the Bible in my day to day life as if they were relevant today.

That includes the teachings of my parents,teachers and Priests too.

I think mine is a better example, the one of the baby condemned by God to die a lingering death in order to punish the father. That wasn’t a ‘law’. God did that. Is that moral?
