What I did say is that we should not discount or vilify the people who show kindness and compassion because their religious beliefs tell them that they should. By this token should we discount or vilify the people who show kindness and compassion because it makes them feel good or because they are paid to do it?
Its interesting...there is a story that when Russia wanted to eliminate religion they decided to focus their plans on young people because the old hard core churchgoing Babuskas would eventually die and religious belief would die with them.....turns out it didn't work like that!

\\ Pixie. But don’t all people have some sort of belief system around which scaffolding they lead their lives?
And if you take away all such scaffolding, people are left believing in ‘Me me me’, and nothing more, which can easily be the road to caring only for yourself.//
That's a very broad statement, how do you account for the thousands of atheists who are doctors, nurses, carers etc. Not all good people are religious and not all religious people are good.

I don't like the word religion if it is applied to Christianity.
Religions are man made, whereas Christianity is revealed in the Lord Jesus Christ, and is a personal relationship with him.
It is non violent, just the opposite for anybody truly following its teachings, and is the ultimate authority for morality.

pixie honestly they don't "instinctively prefer" Evolution means that strategies which work mean that those users live and reproduce and strategies which don't work are extinguished by the death of the users. The elders of the surviving entity teach their young the successful strategies (extelligence)
Ah, woofgang, when you write “we should not discount or vilify the people who show kindness and compassion because their religious beliefs tell them that they should,” I’m afraid those many, maybe hundreds, of Catholic priests spring to mind, who showed kindness and compassion because it was their job, but who showed a great deal more, because it was their predilection.
What I’m saying is not to be fooled by appearances.
Which makes me sad.

yes and that does justify vilifying and punishing them. Good deeds and behaviour do not excuse bad deeds and behaviour and nowhere have I said that it should.
