Before we were born we didn't exist, so time only started at our birth. Perhaps after we die we don't exist, so time would stop then. Eternal life wouldn't be eternal if life had a beginning or an end, so there isn't such a thing. Any thoughts?

To those who believe in life everlasting (Amen!), i say you go for it. If it gives you comfort or a sense of purpose, fine. For those like me who believe 'dead' means 'dead', enjoy it while it lasts :-)
pixie "A bit like being a plant?'

I think more like being a fertilised egg.....So far as we know, the egg has no awareness of its existence but it can be observed to exist, to grow and change...even to die.
How do you know that you weren't conscious of pre birth ? All you know is that you can't retrieve a memory of it.

"Wishful thinking" is your value judgement. It has no influence on a statement that is denying that one can be certain of no existence when not alive here.
The other way around, og... where is the evidence to show there is?
there are folk who say that they have memories of being born. I don't discount them because the facilities to sense phenomena and retain it are there...they have skin sensation, eyes, ears and so on and the brain exists.
Yes, but og is suggesting consciousness without a brain.
One doesn't need evidence to show there is consciousness in order to deny that one can't know that there is none. If you aren't keen on the conjecture, feel free to explain and discuss what you don't like about it; but don't expect proof of a concept that may be untestable.
The point is, you prove things positive, not negative. So there isn't really a question, unless that happens.
But we don't have to prove anything. The statement still holds.

When considering subjects such as spirituality and life one need not ignore all but the most seemingly obvious solutions, as if you do you end up ignoring any area jn which you aren't already knowledgeable; and progress towards derper understanding slows down. It is the maverick ideas that can overturn conventional wisdom.

With any subject, you don't automatically believe everything, unless you can prove it wrong... most people do the opposite. So why this one?
In most subjects all possibilities are discussed. But you don't have to believe in existence prior to birth and after death, merely accept it is a possibility given our lack of knowledge with reality and existence. Lots of folk will tell you they have had experiences that suggest that it is so.
Like who? Without asking for proof or evidence, then- how do you get consciousness without a brain?
The greater wonder is for you is the development of the brain the most mysterious part of the human miracle.
Three weeks after conception, brain cells start forming. In time, about 100 billion neurons—as many as there are stars in the Milky Way—are packed into a human brain.

If that is true, why do we grow old? What went wrong? Why, after some 70 or 80 years, do we die, even though our bodies evidently were designed to last forever?
psalm 90,says is all.
And that all I will say on here on the matter, because you have a brain to use it wisely or foolish.
My friend's husband says he remembers being born and is adamant that he does. Who am I to contradict him??
goodlife - // And that all I will say on here on the matter ... //

Yeah, and I've got a date with Liz Hurley!!
Our bodies aren't designed to last forever, gl. If they were, there would be no need to reproduce.
Our default position is disbelief.

iluvmargie, it is not necessary for you to contradict his false memory, maybe just avoid him in the future.
As woof has said, technically, he may be able to remember... unlikely as it seems, it is possible.
