Why Don’t The Religious Ask Why?

Pondering the posts here, Goodlife quotes from The Watchtower or his preferred version of the bible, Theland quotes from anything that agrees with his own views at any given time (even the much despised Billy Graham organisation if it suits the purpose), Khandro quotes philosophers and those he regards as men of wisdom… and so on… but not one of them ever appears to have an independent thought. They accept it all ‘religiously’ without ever asking ‘Why?’

Why, for example, if God is, as we’re led to believe, omniscient/omnipotent/omnipresent, did he err? Why, if he knew what the outcome would be, did he create man and then regret it? Why (as Idiosyncrasy claimed the other day).did God give Satan permission to rule the earth when that sort of rule wasn’t what God wanted at all? To me none of it makes sense - so it makes sense to ask ‘Why?’ ... doesn’t it?

Why don’t you?

I did ask why to a few things many years ago as a teenager that went to CoE sometimes with my friends family, and all the answers I received both in books and from people didn't pass my own personal smell test so I just quietly stopped going. However it should be said that religion wasn't a large part of my life or identity, I had plenty of more enjoyable activities...

Independent thoughts?
I'm all for that.
That means examining what we can of the totality of human wisdom, and using our reason and logic to determine if any of it is true.
I have done this, and continue to do so, and Christianity answers all of my questions.
I am saddened at the lack of knowledge of God and the bible displayed by so many who are far too quick to mock, dismiss, and twist the bible accounts both for cheap entertainment and self aggrandisement.
Think on this. If you were to die right now, you would immediately find yourself standing naked before God who would judge you.
You would either go straight to eternal life, or to eternal separation from God.
Your choice.
Scaremongering as usual Theland

When it comes to a carrot and a stick, a stick is all the evangelicals are left with.
Nailit, say something I can respond to, not just a slur.

OK, what will be so great about heaven and why do you have to use the fear of eternal damnation to get us there?
Theland, you have no idea of what will happen to me after I die. Please don't be so arrogant, your projections of either eternal life or eternal separation from God are relevant only to those who believe.
Theland...Why don't you stay away from this thread for a while and get back to one which you started and haven't finished.? I refer to 'Make me an Atheist' from which you suddenly did a usual move of yours and disappeared. Your last posting in it was at 00:06 Sun 04th Oct 2020 when it had reached 31 postings and it now stands at !37. Looks as if you left Khandro to try and answer the questions that you had been asked and now he's gone from the thread.

Incidentally, both of you and Khandro are so similar in what you say that I suggested to Khandro that the two of you could be one and the same person, but rather oddly he ignored my comment.

So come on and be a man. Get over to your thread and tidy up all the loose ends.

Hans.
//If I want something, what not take it?
That is entirely reasonable.//

That is the assertion of a depraved mind. Reason informs me that taking the unearned and undeserved from those who have not given it freely in exchange for something they value equally does not make it mine. Stealing is not a reasonable form of currency. Perhaps the wrath of a vengeful god is the only form of currency you are capable of comprehending.

Theland, //twist the bible accounts//

I'm aware that you are not really au fait with the bible. Which bits do you think I've twisted?

Theland, //Think on this. If you were to die right now, you would immediately find yourself standing naked before God who would judge you. //

Where did you find that in the bible? It wouldn't be one of those twists you were talking about, would it?

Theland, as human beings go you're not doing very well.
Theland - // Think on this. If you were to die right now, you would immediately find yourself standing naked before God who would judge you.
You would either go straight to eternal life, or to eternal separation from God.
Your choice. //

I think actually, it might be God's choice.

How would you know - does he take you into his confidence, or are you doing what you usually do, making up what suits you.
Read the bible.
See who twists the message.
Its a plain message, easy to understand.

Theland, as always you can’t answer me because you know that everything I’ve said here can very easily be substantiated. As for that dangerous filth you’re pedalling again, chapter and verse please.
I don't deal with dangerous filth.
Theland, the other day you told us proudly that you 'never preach' - but you don't seem to have stopped since! I'm curious as to HOW you know exactly what will happen to me when I die.
Never - I am answering a question.
How do I know? Read the bible.
Theland, you're on one of your interminable loops again. 'Reading the Bible' makes sense only to those who believe, want to believe, make themselves believe, the messages in there. Once again, you are making claims - about what'll happen to me when I die - based only on your beliefs. Still, I'm grateful that I wasn't sent off to watch a video.

Theland, chapter and verse please.
\\How do I know? Read the bible.//
Theland you don't know and you've acknowledged you haven't read all the bible, so I will ask again. How can you live your life according to a book you haven't read completely, your attitude doesn't make sense? How do you think your God feels about you not having read all his book, cherry picking the bits that suit, do you think he would approve? If you think that then the whole point of religion, Christianity and "following the Bible" is a waste of time. You are not following your God, you're just doing what you want to do under the supposedly safe umbrella of Christianity.
So say you.
Do you know the gospel?
Its quite concise.
