Did anyone watch this, 'let's pretend it's art' annual event? Apart from the risible quality of the competitors, the staging of it in an English Cathedral (Coventry) left me filled with incredulity.

Against the backdrop of the large Graham Southerland alter-painting of Christ in Majesty, an assorted group of rowdy weirdos, lounged around at tables in the body of the church, drinking and sporting their egos & sexual proclivities.

How could an bishop ever allow such a thing to happen? I can find no mention of this grotesque spectacle in any of today's media and wonder if this is through timidity or embarrassment.

You appear to be shifting the emphasis of your position from your OP.

There you were in high dudgeon about 'these people' behaving like the money changers, 'sporting their egos & sexual proclivities' as you rather primly expressed it.

Your emphasis there was clearly on inappropriate behaviour in a church, and the consent of the bishop, which clearly agitated your religious reverence, although you attempted to dodge being outed on that front, as you often do.

Now you are suggesting that it is the lack of fitness for any sort of recognition in the art world that has got you wound up - which is not what you said at first at all.

I guess I must have inherited it somehow, naomi, but I don't how. It's in excellent condition with no foxing or torn pages. There are many sad photos of people picking through the rubble; carrying pails of water through the streets; cars and ambulances resting on top of buildings, etc.

Interestingly Sanmac that ties in with another running thread re Pub names (I think) - my Town's Coat of Arms also bears the Coventry (Mercia) Elephant and Castle.

It's not about my taste & it's not even about the quality of the work, it is about the whole presentation being in a cathedral as I tried to describe it in the OP, which I don't think anybody actually watched last night.

No you wouldn't be right; some of the greatest artworks in the world are in churches & there's no reason to prevent an art exhibition taking place in one.

Them my point bears repeating, even though you are studiously ignoring it as usual -

Your objection is not to the exhbition itself, but the behaviour of the exhibutors, which appear to fall below the standards you appear to expect from people conducting themslves in a religious setting.

Specifically, their twn exhibitions of 'ego' and 'sexual proclivities' which have aroused your ire, as pointed out in your OP.

Returning to the OP; I have always hated Sutherland's depiction of Christ looking like a giant wasp. I'm surprised he got past the patrons without somebody having a go.

Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph is a large tapestry by Graham Sutherland, installed at the north end of the new Coventry Cathedral in Coventry, England, .

and you should alter it to 'altar' - chrissakes

The Anglican church is latitudinarian

Gawd the usual screamers, that scream out loud when they see a long word, will give vent to their er screams.

that means boys and girls it takes all sorts - - like Abers or princess Di ( famous RC reject - Cardinal Hume said he ( it - Rome silly!) wasnt ready

and Justin Welby DD was a canon - clappy happy ( a division of the church ) so it is unlikely
