Even if I believed the gospel accounts (which I don't) there is nothing in them to support the idea that Jesus was dead. Putting it another way, those who claim that he was dead have the job of explaining what killed him. It couldn't have been crucifixion, which was deliberately designed to be a slow lingering death lasting days. During that time breathing would become more and more difficult, cardio-pulmonary complications would set in, the victim would go into a coma and eventually die. The last thing he could do just before dying would be to cry out in a loud voice!
Jesus' companions weren't dead and had to have their legs broken. Pilate was surprised at the speed of his death. Taken down after a few hours, Jesus would have suffered from wounds in his wrists and feet and a sore back from the scourging. Joseph of A. and Nicodemus, with their bandages and ointments, in a cool tomb, could have got him on his feet in a couple of days, to limp off before the Romans put him back on the cross. Like everything else in the story, believing in the resurrection is a matter of faith, not of assessing evidence.
