RABAT - A Moroccan theologian repeated his claims Sunday that Muslim girls could marry as early as nine years old, arguing it was sanctioned by the Prophet Mohammed.

"The marriage of nine-year-old girls is not forbidden because according to the Hadith (the Prophet Mohammed's sayings), Mohammed married Aisha when she was only seven-years-old and he consummated his union when she was nine," wrote Sheikh Mohamed Ben Abderrahman Al-Maghraoui on his website (Maghrawi.net).

"Those who criticise me, like the press or Moroccan television as well as the lawyer who filed the complaint (against me), are part of a secular attack against the Islamic nation and its theologians," he added.

Clearly Keyplus is absolutely right to say that the age of consent is somewhat arbitrary and to say that most Muslims do not indulge in this minority practice. There can be no reasonable suggestion that either of these facts is contentious.

Equally clearly, defending the marriage of children to adults on the basis that there is no global age of consent and then throwing in a load of irrelevant rubbish about how a minority of non-Muslims behave is totally ludicrous, and does nothing to detract from the fact that this practice is a blatant abuse of children that no decent person should attempt to defend. In this I would fully expect to find most Muslims also in agreement with this.
