I was brought up in the catholic faith and at church all women wore hats - why ?

A mantilla was often worn but a headscarf or hat was acceptable. In the very early church women would have had long hair which may have fulfilled the requirement. Equally as a sign of respect, men had to have their heads uncovered when in church. Contrast this with the orthodox Jewish practice of head covering.
