pbuh?

Kept coming across this abbreviation in this section and was going to ask what it meant.
But it suddenly came to me - peace be upon him.
So now my questions are -
What on earth does it mean?
Why do people use it?
What will happen to them if they don't say it?
P.S. I suppose religious folk would say that my flash of inspiration was caused by God telling me!

Muslims believe in all of the prophets from Adam to Muhammad and all in between, likes of Jesus, Moses, David and so on. Where Jews do not believe in Jesus or Muhammad and Christians do not believe in Muhammad. Muslims believe that there were around 125K messengers sent by God, I think only 25 have been mentioned by name in Quran. May Peace and blessing of God be upon them all.
PBUH, as said peace be upon him, for a single messenger or prophet and peace be upon them all when we talk about more than one.
Why do Muslims say that? Good question. It is the same word Muslims say when they greet each other on daily basis. In Arabic (Asslamu Alaikum). It is the same way Jesus (pbuh) used to greet people (it is even in the bible). We believe that all the prophets hear that as living people do and reply to that saying peace be upon you too. Same as a Muslim will reply in day to day life (Wa Alaikum Asslam). So in simple words its not only a greeting but a prayer also. And then you do not have to look at the clock before saying it as is the case in Good morning, Good noon, Good after noon etc.

Keyplus, I'm not entirely sure that the Jews and Christians acknowledge all the prophets that Islam acknowledges, but certainly neither of those religions consider Jesus or Mohammed to be prophets, so in describing them as 'their' prophets (referring to Islam), I was accurate. They aren't anyone elses, that's for sure.
So,if I understand correctly, Muslims believe that invisible men, living in the sky, listen to every word spoken by every Muslim every second of every day to ensure that they say "peace be upon him" after every single mention of his (or her) name.
Keyplus, as a reasonable, educated (I can tell from your posts) man you will understand that I simply find the above impossible to believe.
Surely you must acknowledge how strange this all seems to an atheist who had a scientific schooling?

Willowman There are so many things that will not make sense if you would only see those scientifically. Can you prove love and hate scientifically? Scientifically earth was flat only until about couple of hundred years ago. Scientifically Sun was stationary, or may be still is as I am not scientist and do not know what scientific stance is in this regard. Science did not know about uniqueness of DNA or finger prints until very recent time. Science did not know that human skin has pain receptors. All these things were written in Quran 1429 years ago.
Science still does not believe in life on other planets, angels, hell, paradise, and God. One day they will, but for few it might be too late.
But any way that is altogether a different subject.

Wiz If you really are curious ( I do know why you are curious) then this is what Quran says.

Bullsh!t. Ptolomy (AD 83c.168) was making sophisticated calculations about the subject, as were many others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_mythol ogy

So, you don't have a clue what you're talking about, but you're going to say it anyway? Anyway, the Sun has a rotation of 7.284 103 km/h.
Interestingly, in 27:61 we find the following stated clearly load of old tosh:
"Is not He (best) Who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in the folds thereof, and placed firm hills therein, and hath set a barrier between the two seas? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Nay, but most of them know not!"
Ditto 30:25, 35:41, 31:10, 2:22, 16:15, all claiming Allah has decreed the Earth is completely immobile, in contravention to the known facts. (The Bible, from which the Quran steals liberally, is similarly in error about such things).
The Quran, for what it's worth, asserts the Sun orbits the Earth and (elsewhere) sets in a puddle.
Science did not know about uniqueness of DNA
...and nor did the Quran. The verse that is claimed for it is 80:19:
"From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him"
TBC

'Qaddarahu', translated as 'proportioned', comes from the Arabic verb 'qadare', translated as 'arranging, setting out, planning, programming, seeing the future, the writing of everything in destiny'. The earlier Bible contained exactly notions of sperm being a seed, so this is hardly unique to the Quran, and both are based in the erroneus understanding that the seed was planted in the woman's belly only in order to grow, not to be a carrier of half the genes of a new person. Any idea why the Quran fails to mention ova even once?
or finger prints until very recent time.
Utter cack. The ancient Babylonians were using fingerprints imprinted in clay as unique signatures on legal agreements between 1885-1913 B.C.
Science did not know that human skin has pain receptors. All these things were written in Quran 1429 years ago.
Taken from 4:56, right? "Lo! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment. Lo! Allah is ever Mighty, Wise."
It is obviously not necessary for the writer to know anything whatsoever about pain receptors in the skin to have written this (the author presumably has skin, and therefore would know perfectly well that it would hurt like $%*&& to be burnt without having any scientific understanding of it). If he believed that the brain was the seat of pain, he could still devise the same torture porn imagery.
Science still does not believe in life on other planets,
What? Gibberish. The overwhelming consensus is that it is monumentally improbable that only one unremarkable planet orbiting an unremarkable sun in an unremarkable galaxy should bear life. We don't have proof of it, but it's overwhelmingly accepted as a statistical likelihood. It's about as close to a 'belief' as you'll ever get in science!

Assertation without evidence.
But any way that is altogether a different subject.
Yes, don't let anyone actually engage you on this subject, because it rapidly becomes apparent how useless the Quran is as a scientific text.
Incidentally, I've saved you the bother of writing a response by doing it myself:
1) If you really knew what you were talking about, you'd be famous not anonymous.
2) In the original Arabic, it's different.
3) Waaah, booo-hoo, you're mean.
4) Science will eventually revoke all its laws and come to agree with the Quran.
5) How could Mohammed, an ignorant and illiterate man know these things?
6) Some incomprehensible, tortuous analogy that makes absolutely no sense to anyone apart from you.

Had you thought in the beginning about what you mentioned right at the end then it would have saved a lot of time and effort. So due to that fact I will not go into too much detail as well known scientists have agreed with Quran. So here to refresh your memory. I know we have spoke about embryo before and I remember you mentioning about Greeks knowing about it and possible copy from there. Did he copy word to word including the proven mistakes of the Greeks or he only copied correct ones? He must have been a clever man to have copied only what would be proved 1400 years after. That might as well be the case in your Ptolomy AD83-c.168). Any way this bit is to refresh your memory.

Now lets see what it says,
27:61. Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (can there be another) god besides Allah. Nay, most of them know not.
Is Quran talking about stationary earth in a sense of how we feel it under our feet on daily basis or as a unmoving planet? Even word Abode in your translation tells something. Arabic (Faanbatna Bihi) means to live in.

30:25, 35:41, 31:10, 2:22, 16:15. I cant see any thing in these verses that literally says that Earth as a planet is stationary. It is talking about sustenance, Mountains stopping from Earth from Shaking with people when they move around. Etc.
About your Sun and setting in the puddle, Here is a very detailed explanation, so help your self.

I did like your explanation about pain receptors. It shows that you could not find in Greek times in that regard so you decided to dismiss it.
At the end Yes I would still say that you do need a bit more knowledge in Arabic as language as it is one of the most vast language of the world.
However if things are still not clear then you may refer to these as more detailed answers to all of your questions you may have. But do watch all of it if you are sincere about your own knowledge.

If you recall our previous discussion of the embryology stuff, perhaps you recall the fact that what the Quran says about it is actually wrong, including transparently wrong errors such as sperm originating between the ribs.
For the record, many Arabic mother tongue Muslims agree that those translations are correct, so don't hide behind that excuse.
Perhaps you can also go through the other cases of the Quran naked stating the Earth is a static object and explain away the sun orbiting the Earth. etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
Of course, none of this is for your benefit; I have no expectation of changing your mind. It's faaaaar to damaging to your world view for you to possibly apply the same criticial thinking to your own religious book as you do to other people's.

Of course I have applied critical approach to Quran, my own life and everything around me, as well as other religious books. I did have my doubts at time but looking for the questions sincerely helped me and I did find logical answers. I am always looking for answers for or against and I can only say that I have an open mind and I do analyze every thing.
I am not shutting my eyes and just believing in every thing. That is another beauty of Quran that it encourages people to learn and gain more knowledge about every thing and not only religious knowledge.
For example I had always found it confusing when people talked about Islam allowing sex with slave. Until I found this question and answer. Not only it cleared my mind but also it confirmed my belief about Islam being a practical way of life. Here you go, if you want to read it, otherwise just ignore it.

For your words that many Arabic tongue Muslims agree about the translations..
Did you ask them if the other translations were wrong? Among Arabs they use different words for same things. And Quran was not only for specific Arabs. In fact Quran was not only for Arabs either. As I was just reading today about Earth being egg shaped and found out that Libyan people have always used Dahaha for egg. Now Saudi Arabian at that time may not have used this word. It has few different meaning.

Merely observations, but its all very selective. Proof of the awareness of fingerprints from a text that mentions the very tips of fingers? Human fingerprints arent on the very tips of fingers. Theyre on the pads of fingers.
Awareness of pain receptors in skin being produced from a text that speaks only of the pain of burnt skin? Any fool knows that burnt skin is painful. Always has been.
And then you get to something that mentions the earth being motionless (and even flat) but that doesnt apply. How could it?
As for the deliberations on masters having sex with slaves - Ive heard of the casting couch, but this is ridiculous! And worse still, its rationalised!
