Kept coming across this abbreviation in this section and was going to ask what it meant.
But it suddenly came to me - peace be upon him.
So now my questions are -
What on earth does it mean?
Why do people use it?
What will happen to them if they don't say it?
P.S. I suppose religious folk would say that my flash of inspiration was caused by God telling me!

Keyplus, you arque about specific items but you have not answered my second question.
Do you actually believe in the invisible men living in the sky listening to every single word spoken throughout the earth?
In simple words, Yes I do.
But they are not living in the skies. Sky is what is visible to us human.
The point is that theists claim that their holy book contain the words of god . Who says so ? Man. The original words were compiled by men who said God had spoken to them , and human beings believe them because they want to believe , they need to believe, they need the crutches of a blind belief to help them through life . Thousands of people ever since man has been on earth have heard voices in their head or claim to have done so. Many people sincerely believe, they are the words of God,.But there is not a thread of evidence that it is anything more than a mental abnormality. The very fact that there have been countless beliefs over the ages all claiming their's is the correct one is in itself proof that in all probability none of them are.

Good point well put modeller.
I believe that James Bond is a real man, and a superhuman one at that, and I have proof.
I have read many books describing Him and His many exploits in saving the world from evil men. He is wonderful, and some of His feats, to me at least, are miraculous.
And I can go one better than the usual theists because I have actually seen film of Him performing these deeds. And to show that He is above us mere mortals He appears in these films in various guises, looking like different people.
And because I really truly believe this, no amount of contrary logical evidence thrown at me by people such as Keylpus will make me change my mind.
Does this all sound familiar?
I suppose, getting back to the Q, it is similar to western usage of Requiescat in pace or May he/she rest in peace which comes from a Latin prayer. Some people still talk of our dear departed, or say God rest his/her soul, it has just fell out of modern usage.

Willowman, the same could be said of Jesus. He has been in many books and films such as Jesus of Nazareth, The Last Temptation of Christ and The Life of Brian. I think if James Bond was actually killed rather than laboriously and ludicrously set up in a typically escapable auto-killing machine that inevitably fails, and then relived to tell the tale I might be impressed. Can you arrange it?
Octavius After Willowmans example of James Bond, I decided to leave him alone. Because very easily I could guess that how far he would go to prove his point.

I must admit that it did make me laugh.
