okay religious people, can you explain to me why your God lets such bad things happen, please? I am bemused.
apart from what we hear/see on the news, I had a terrible childhood, I've grown up and seen such bad things happen to good people (and vice versa), and this week my daughter's 16 year old friend died in a dreadful accident.
I'm not after sympathy.. you've probably all been through something similar.
but why does your God allow such things to happen?

Cassa - so your saying there is absoloutly no point in praying or going to church/mosque/synagogue/temple/chapel.
Why would you want to have faith sara as you mentioned earlier? Some comfort! If I believed in god I would be very angry at him for allowing all the pain and suffering in the world and the horror of nature.'god loves us does he? I'd hate to see what he would do if he hated us.
Just a note-my computer crashed during that post! SPOOKY-I have now felt the wrath of god and expect eternal damnation for questioning his existence!!

Dave, personally I'd never criticise anyone for their beliefs (although I may raise my eyebrows at times!). I'm sure people get some comfort from their religion. and a sense of belonging.

lol ganesh.. you're doomed!

I guess it's as my last post.. some comfort and a sense of belonging but in truth, I feel the same as you do.
I'm asked to hypothesize on our purpose ? I can only guess but a good possibly as I see it would be for us to mature and learn and change to become more than we presently are. More understanding, more capable, more whatever. What would be your guess ?

Some theists may claim he interferes but I suspect there are many beliefs on this planet. At one time there seemed to be some evidence that patients prayed for fared better, so one ought not rule out special requests. But it doesn't generally seem to be the norm. I think some believers tend to go 'overboard'. keen to attribute everything they see as 'good' to a deity,

Is there a point to going to a place of worship ? Unsure, but if it allows you time to think on spiritual matters it may not be such a bad thing. after all there's no point in learning to play a musical instrument but many feel they personally benefit from doing so.

But back to the thread title, one has to define God first; that stated if, like me, you are more comfortable with a first cause for everything than not, then one can label that first cause 'God' thus proving as far as one can, that God exists. The quibble reduces to what form a God takes.
Read a few chapters of the Old Testament and you will see that God doesn't just let bad stuff happen but relishes the brutality and suffering. He is self obsessed and narcissistic.

Really not the kind of being one would want to befriend let alone worship.
WShee9 "AP is a prat" explain this ...sh!t for brains.
...or perhaps you are too much of a vegetable to be able to ;-)
Obviously the Big Bang was caused by a Big Whack. I am quite happy to be a Whacko.
You are reading about a particular view of God Beso. One envisaged by the leaders of a group desperate to have a means of establishing order into society. The view of a wrathful God would help with this and so would be a preferred choice. It makes no comment on how accurate that view would be.

But besides, if it were 100% accurate would you want to stand out as one who refuses to capitulate to a brutal, self obsessed, narcissistic all powerful entity who relishes others suffering ? What courage, what bravery !
Beso isn't the only brave one, there are plenty of us willing to stand up and say god isn't very nice anyway, but seeing as we don't believe in him anyway it's not all that brave really. Some of the old testament bible stories are quite interesting though.
Sorry to sound like an old hippy sara, but the sese of belonging you look for is there, not in a religious 'club' but in the human 'connection' and empathy that we have for each other.Love and be loved and you can have that feeling.
People only want to believe in something after death as they can't cope with the idea that you die, then there's nothing.,either for themselves or their loved ones, and I admit it is hard.
Question Author
thanks ganesh, I'm doing my very best to believe in mankind ;o)
Don't worry, a vengeful God won't care if you didn't believe in it.

BTW It is often claimed a belief in God as purely down to not being able to accept that there is nothing after you die, which is quite an act of faith by those claiming it. I suspect it in error for at least 2 reasons. First the existence of a deity makes no claim as to whether we as individuals continue after bodily death or not. All 4 options are feasible God could exist but you may only exist for a short while, or God may not exist and you still only exist for a short while, or God could exist and you continue to exist in some form after bodily death as well, or God may not exist and yet you find that you stick around in some form anyway. Another reason to not believe it follows, is that for those who look for evidence of possible survival, it may be found. You have but to be given information that the informer could not have been gained via what we would consider normal means; and accept the best explanation is the one given by the medium since we have no reason apart from incredulity to find a more complex explanation.
If the earth and everything upon it was created by god then he also created wickedness. There can be no denial of this fact as the 'logic' that demands the existence of a prime creator places the responsibility for the creation of wickedness on god. There is no cop out. By this reasoning god is wicked and the Cathars were correct. The only alternative is that the god stuff is all nonsense.
O G // there seemed to be some evidence that patients prayed for fared better //
Last year an experiment was carried out on a large group of cardiac patients in the US awaiting a heart by- pass. Half were prayed for and the others were not . It was a blind experiment no one knew which was which . Their surgery and recovery was all documented over a period of a year.
Only then was it revealed which was which and the results were such that the difference was negligable.
However if having a faith in anything be it fairies , goblins or a lucky rabbit's paw , makes you happier or able to cope with life better then that's not a bad thing. As long as your belief does not harm anyone else. Such as Jehovah Witnesses who let people die rather than allowing a blood transfusion.
Dave .. Going to church isn't in the ten commandments is it..it's all invented by the established church to maintain control of your mind.. and it works.
Wickedness is a human concept. It's meaning may be lost in the bigger picture.

I have faith in my doctor, maybe that's not a bad thing.
"you think there's a god? really??"

Yes.
Of course there's a God. Only someone with a divine sense of humour could have created the Co-op.
Haha, too true!
