Hardly a shock TBH. Yes, the timing is poor but the way they've been playing and his record there is hardly gleaming.
Maybe the thinking is that new blood will inspire them for the relegation fight they've obviously become part of.

I think the board are looking for a successor while there are still a few games left rather than waiting until it's too late.

Although they looked defeated the minute they stepped on the pitch it was only 1-0 against the league leaders, and they scored it. Bad idea sacking O'Neil this late in the season.
