Until 1992 the Summer and Winter Olympics used to be held in the same year. They now alternate every 2 years. Why did it change?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The IOC took the decision to hold the Summer and Winter Olympics in alternate even years in 1986.The first games to be held after this decision was Lillehammer in 1994.The last country to host both the summer and winter games in the same year was Germany in 1936 with Berlin and Garmisch being the venues.Presumably the decision was taken to assist IOC members with planning and travel etc..
