They are trying to perform a really difficult job under immense pressure from players and media replays. There are also football teams that don't cheat, try reading about Corinthian Casuals.
I said you made a generalization. "The whole sport is a cheating contest" - your words. Officials are very bit a part of football as the players - neither can do without the other. I've still never seen a referee or linesman cheat, in what is an increasingly difficult role whether its in the professional leagues or on the local park on a Sunday morning.
