Racing's Loss
Last week saw the news that 'Smokin' Joe Mercer had died. Champion apprentice in both 1952 and '53, and champion Jockey in 1979, Joe got the leg up on some unforgettable horses - Brigadier Gerard, Bustino, Kris, to name just a few - and rode 4 St Leger winners.
Today sees the news that legendary gambler Barney Curly has died, aged 81. Barney was also a trainer but it is his betting coups that made him known to punters the world over. He also dedicated much of his life to his charity, Direct aid For Africa, which he founded in 1996.
No doubt both men will be missed by their family and friends, but the racing world will also feel the loss of two real characters of the sport.
