Windows error file mismatch

My husband's laptop with Vista has this message today (error0xC004D401) Google searchbrought up Wiki errors and offered repair file. Is this the best way forward or better suggestion please thanks As far as we are aware we made no alterations to cause

Thanks Chuck no new installations but he updated Avast and I will use your link to resolve as advised
