I've placed a card in the local newsagents and an advertisement in the Lost and Found section of Gumtree.
I've never used one before. Would it be safe to try it in my computer to see if I can identify the owner?

I wouldn't. 4 gig sticks aren't expensive and it might be someone's idea of a good joke to stick a virus on it
Probably won't harm to look. There may be pictures of people/places you recognise or other info that will lead to tracing the owner.

The owner has his Christian name on a bit of paper sellotaped to the side of it. There have been a lot of students moving in around here recently and I thought one might have had a lot of hard work saved on it.
I'll maybe wait to see if the ad in the newsagents gets any replies.
When connecting something like this you should have the option to scan for viruses. I once found a micro SD card - after scanning it and looking at some photos on it turned out it belonged to a former colleague of mine who I hadn't seen for 3 years. Small world.
In that case sandy it may have college info on it, making it easier to trace the owner. Up to you, though I'm not sure how often students use a newsagents these days.

I know some go in for their morning coffee and to buy tobacco and rizla papers.
Students can afford to buy coffee from a shop? What is the world coming to.......LOL
Question Author
But they're economising on their smokes. Well, their tobacco anyway
rizla papers :)

anneasquith, I'm sure the rizla are an indication of impoverished students sitting in attic rooms and trying to make a half ounce of Golden Virginia or Old Holborn last the week.

Or last 2 weeks if it has a little something 'added'.
well sandy, no doubt you are right :)
Resist the temptation to look until you've given it at least a couple of weeks and it still hasn't been claimed, and then do a Malwarebytes scan of the drive before looking at anything on it.
But if you believe it belongs to a student and has a thesis or similar on it and the student has to start again from scratch.........

Your call.
Take it to an internet café/Library and stick it in...

I'll wait until Monday evening, a lot of students here go home at the weekend to get their washing done and get fed, then ask here how to set about scanning it
Is there anywhere on the college website you could post your message? And report it to their lost and found dept. It would be lovely to find its owner and if it is a student, they'll be more likely to catch sight of an electronic notice.

The students around here are mostly at Queens University. I'll have a look.

I've just sent this to the students union. It might do the trick.
I've found a 4gb memory stick in the Sharman Rd area of Stranmillis.
I've noticed a lot of new students have moved into the area recently and thought it may belong to one of them. Is there an electronic 'Lost & Found' board in the Union where details could be posted? The owner has taped his Christian name onto the side of it so it shouldn't be hard for him to establish that it's his.
He could use this e-mail address, which is a throw-away one, to contact me.
If all else fails I can put it on Facebook for you.

It probably contains nothing of any importance, but who knows - could be the only copy of the next bestseller or the thesis of some young scientist that will be going on to make great discoveries.

It could also be loads of naughty pictures of his girlfriend
