I've placed a card in the local newsagents and an advertisement in the Lost and Found section of Gumtree.
I've never used one before. Would it be safe to try it in my computer to see if I can identify the owner?

Next time try and find something cute (kitten or puppy) and I am sure that many on AB will help you find a home for it. I think that I need a couple more cats before I am officially a 'Crazy Cat Lady.

My wee dog wouldn't be happy at the prospect of another dog, or even worse-a cat, trespassing on its territory.
Why is it I can never find a large bag of used bank notes? Of course, I'd hand them in for the reward.

It used to be a favourite way of infecting someone's computer. Most people can't resist the temptation to see what's on a memory stick that they find.
DO NOT PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER.

No don't plug it in, you might not like what you see.

It would only be curiosity - whatever it is and however important or unimportant the contents are, they are very unlikely to offer a definitive ID and name and address of the owner.

To be honest, the chances of someone using a 4gb stick as a prank to put a virus on a computer are miniscule in the extreme.
At most, you'd use a 1gb but certainly not a 4gb.
Plus there's plenty of free software with which to scan it first.
Some are just a tad too alarmist IMHO.
