Scanning problem

Having successfully helped a friend scan a small picture ( about 4in x6in ) several times we now find we only get a fraction of the picture or sometimes none at all. As far as I know we haven't changed any settings etc. The printer is a Dell all-in-one (sorry don't know the number). Any suggestions would be welcome.

most scanning software has a pre scan option, use that and you can normally drag some lines about on the preview to select what area you want to scan for the full scan.
