Putting the computer clock into Excel
9 Answers
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to incorporate the computers clock, and for that matter the calender into an Excel spreadsheet so that the spreadsheet will always be showing the current date and time whilst it is being used? Any help appreciated.

I guess you could write this into a macro, so that every time the workbook was opened it would insert these in whichever cells you chose.
However, the time won't update - so I guess you won't see the current time - you will just be seeing the time that the workbook was opened at.
Hope this helps.

Just found this :
It is an analog clock for a spreadsheet : bit unsightly but tells the time

as far as I know - no - or at least not directly
excel has 2 main update options ... manual and auto
but auto isn't quite what it sounds like
the =now() function calculates date/time automatically .... when entered - but not constantly
(f9 will update the display)
the only way I know to do this would be using a constantly running macro
(try googling excel clock macro)
the possible downside is the impact on your machine's speed
(I think a bit like the wall planner suggestion ... a clock is at it's best when it's the round thing on a wall)

Another brilliant reply. Thank you. Actually, there is no real need for a clock or date on the spreadsheet although it would be useful for the volunteer staffing list as their time, unlike commercial staff is so variable. Just wanted to be a bit flash. You know what us cockneys are like :) Very interesting though. I must do a study of Excel, I find it very interesting to use.
Cheers for all your help

I think there might be some "over egging of the pudding" here, certainly if Vista is involved anyway:
If you want a self updating clock on your pc regardless of whether excel is open or not use the sidebar that comes as standard with Vista. XP has similar options but involves downloading some "widget" software which will do exaclty the same thing. In either case simply set the clock to "always on top"

Yet another helpful answer, thank you. Actually, I'm using XP so I'll have to find the download you mentioned.
As I have said its not too important for the charity to have a clock on the spreadsheet, I just wanted to show off a bit :)
However, the spinoff of this is that I've become very interested in the many functions within Excel.
Thanks again for your welcome help.
