Does anyone know how I can change a DATE in excel to the 5-digit NUMBER reference? I have tried format cell, number, number and general...does not work!

No, that doesn't work, it just shows a list of dates still.
If you mean you want to display the serial date value then enter

=DATEVALUE("1/10/2010")

in the cell and it will display the serial value for today (or whatever date you put in the formula)

As far as know it can't be done just by formatting the cell.

Thanks, that worked. However if I wanted to do a big list of dates, it won't work, as you said. Seems Excel has some flaws, what a let down! Thanks anyway...
What version of Excel?

Have just tested 2000, 2003 and 2007 and all accept

General
Number (decimal places = 0)

to produce the date code.
