Unable to import images?

Suddenly I am unable to import some images into my emails. I get a small box with what looks like a sheet of paper that has been torn in half with a corner folded over. The images were in an emails sent by a friend of some creatures left behind after the tsunami and I can't view any of them. I'm using Thunderbird and Windows 7.
What's gone wrong?
Any help,please?

Assuming Thunderbird is set up correctly (or OK before) the images have been damaged in transit .. or have been removed.
You could ask him/her to zip up and attach the zip .. making sure max size of email is lower than 10Mb.
