document not opening

i wrote a letter in microsoft word on my old laptop that was windows xp i now have new laptop which is windows 7 but when i open the letter on new laptop it is just a load of letters like this
#xxxyxyxxnm,cnyyyye jxixxxxxxxxxxxxzzzzzzzzzz
why wont it show what i had typed in the letter

Are you able to get the options to open it in different versions of Word?

it opens up in word pad i cant see any options

Have you tried right clicking it? You should get a list of options to "open with".......

What version of Word do you have now ?

the only programme that came on this laptop is microsoft office 2010 sorry if i sound vaugue im not real good with computers

Which version of Word was used to create the document?

Try opening Word. Then File, Open and find your document. Click on the down arrow next to All Word Documents (bottom right) and select the document type that matches the one you're trying to open.
That might work.

How did you find the document to try to open it?

If you click on Start and then Documents you should get a list of documents.
Find the one you want on the list.
Right click on it.
You should get an option that says Open With.
Follow this and see if you can find something that opens it

One of the options on the down arrow next to All Word Documents is Works (bottom one).

ok factor 30 did all you said i could either open it with word pad r word writer in both cases it just a bunch of xxxxxxxxxx and zzxx looks like chinese lol i saved the original letter on a stick and it comes up fine on daughters laptop thats windows xp i guess this new laptop doesnt have the program for it . i was shocked when i brought this laptop how much stuff had not been put on it compared to the old xp one i have to pay for microsoft works apparently , prices go up for laptops and they have less on them its ok if yo know what you are doing i guess you can always find a way to get it off internet im useless tho lol

Surely this means you have Word 2010 on your computer then.
