I don't have a password to unlock my laptop, as one time in the past the password didn't work and I was lucky to get into the laptop eventually. Does this mean that I am at risk, can someone else get into my laptop if they are outside my house ?? Sorry perhaps not explaining myself very well, hope you know what I mean ! If ABers think I should use a password, can someone tell me how to put it on again ?? I have Windows 7.
I don't have a password on mine either and just means someone inside my house can use it (or if it's stolen). I think you mean can someone access your internet from outside your house and they can only do that if you don't have your internet security enabled, nothing to with a password on your laptop (I think)
A password would prevent soemone accessing the laptop if you were to lose it or have it stolen. Or if someone where to access it without your permission.
Getting into your laptop from outside the house is less about the laptopn and more about your wifi. You need to protect the wifi connection for that. Click on the connection icon, right click and choose properties to see if the security is set. If not set it in control panel/security.
If it's stolen, you can get into it anyway .. not a problem.
You are just protecting yourself 'locally' really.
If it leaves the house password it .. it will deter the 'casual' user .. but will not guarantee anything.
Only safe way is to encrypt the drive totally, using a key which is not stored on the machine .. obviously.
On mine its bottom right of the screen, four vertical bars which when you hover on it, says Internet access. Click on it and it tells you that your connected and shows the strength of the wifi signal.
