DVD: Abbreviation of digital videodisc, storage unit of video and audio data necessitating a laser for reading and writing... check here for verification:

DVD is actually the abbreviation for Digital Versatile Disc.It was originally Digital Video Disc, but 'Video' was superseded by 'Versatile' due to (suprisingly enough) the versatilty of the discs.

Click http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=DVD&Find=Find for an authoritative acronym website. It says the 'V' stands for 'versatile', as you suggest, having formerly stood for 'video'. So, it would appear that both possibilities are (were?) acceptable.

Well, well, TEAK, it seems we have been involved in a bit of synchrography!
