I Tunes file location

I tried to play some music in my I Tunes library but the following message comes up-

'The song could not be used because the original file could not be found.
Would you like to locate it? '

Obviously I would but I don't know what I should enter into as 'File Name'

I'm concerned as I have some 800 tunes including some rare jazz and would hate to think that they are gone.

Any help please?

I am such a klutz with technology I feared I had inadvertantly done something catastrophic to my library.

I'm hoping that Chuck or one of our other resident experts will come to the rescue.

I hope I'm wrong, kayakamina, but I think in my case the files genuinely aren't there.

In some cases I think they were originally on media player rather than i-tunes but somehow appeared on my i-tunes library.

Have you copied across from one computer to another at some stage?

Have you tried doing a search of your computer using a key word from a file- eg "Brubeck"

By doing as you suggested and typing in a name I have established that at least each individual tune is 'somewhere else' and not lost altogether.
I did transfer the library from my desktop computer to this laptop and the
library is still intact on the desktop.

Is there a sync facility on your itunes- you could connect the laptop and desktop and try that.
I wonder if there is a limit to how many times you can copy over an i tunes file

I'm going to get my grandson to come around and have a look. You know what whiz-kids youngsters are.
I was anxious to establish that the music hadn't vanished for good.

Just click on the 'Blue' links open read further info.

It's important that all your music is located in the one folder only.
Not spread across various locations on your PC / Mac.
Hope this steers you in the correct direction to a fix.
