Laptop keeps defaulting to 'offline'

What can I do to fix this persistent problem? Can anyone explain for me? (Has to be simple!!)
I'm getting so fed up with it.

do you mean offline from the internet ? What browser are you using ?

it was rude of me not to get back to you sooner - apologies.
I am using IE7 (don't want IE8). What happens is that when I am on the Internet, the connection fails and I get a message to connect via 'miniport' to broadband (I have wireless).
Then I am told no connection is available. This is in spite of the fact that the connection icon at the bottom right of the screen tells me I am connected.
I have to go to the 'Tools' menu in IE and then always find that the 'work offline' box is ticked.
Sorry if this is a little incoherent - I can't explain it any better. This has only been happening since I changed my router and only on the laptop, not the PC.

Sounds like a virus. Can you backdate settings at Start/Help & Support/System Restore. Choose the earliest date available.

I have McAfee and Malwarebytes - they have not shown anything on scans.
I'll try System Restore in the morning.
Can I let you know how I get on?

I prefer Mozilla Firefox to IE as when you do get a virus you can re-download MFfox to correct your settings.
