Help! The list of friends now appears down the right hand side of the screen and I don't know how to remove it.

Hope that makes sense.

you can't remove it but you can hide it
There is a (very) feint arrow at the top of that list
Click and select 'hide ticker'

Or if it's the facebook chat list the button to hide it is at the bottom right corner of the list.
