Loading Songs On To Ipod....

How do I set up a new playlist on my ipod?
I've got the songs on my desktop, and I know I have to drag and drop them over into i Tunes, but what do I select to be able to do this, as when I'm trying to do it, I just get a little red circle with a line through it and they don't go over.
Which do I have to select, is it New Playlist, New Playlist Folder or something else???
Sorry if this sounds rude, but I'm in a bit of a rush, so a quick answer would be much appreciated :-)
Thanks.

Lol. How am I supposed to know these things! :P
Ok. I've plugged it in, and it said 'connecting' and then 'syncronising do not disconnect'. It now says 'connected. eject before disconnecting'.
Does that mean the songs have automatically loaded on there now, or do I need to do something on the itunes screen?
