Ntl have recently introduced a spam filter to their email system. You can adjust your preference for the action taken e.g. deleted, delivered with 'SPAM' in title etc. via the webmail site - http://webmail.ntlworld.com/
Should have indicated that you do this in Options > Spam

Thanks for your quick reply Kempie, that explains it very well.
Tony. I subscribe to Spamcon. Never use my ntl address. I get 500 disposable email addresses per year, so if I have a problem with one, I switch it off. Costs about 10 a year, but well worth it.
I've never paid for anything to prevent spam and rarely get any.
I use Mailwasher and try not to leave my email address online if I can help it.

i.e. if asked to fill in a form online, don't enter an email address that you don't want spammed. Use a spare one.
Stevie. This is the nice thing about Spamcon. I can have a different email address for every forum I register with. If i was to get spam, I would know exactly where it originated. Harvesters don't pick the addresses up. Incidentally, I use Mailwasher (Pro) Have done for years. I never skimp on security.
