norton anti virus

Hi,       just out of interest, can anyone tell me how long Norton anti virus takes to do a full system scan, and how many files it scans? Mine took 47 mins 10secs And scanned over 103,000 files!! my computer is practically brand new, 2 weeks old and i haven't put hardly anything on here yet! Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

Seams normal to me, our computer takes atleats an hour so scan, we tend to just put it on to scan whilest doing something else, tho it does cause running programs to slow down.

I would say that ur scan has taken a little too long seeing that it is a brand new PC with little on it. but there are many factors you need to consider first. One of the main ones is the Anti-Virus software used. Different companies / versions of AV are equipped with different 'scan engines'. Depending on how efficient these engines are, will determine how quick the scan is.

I personally do not like to use Norton AV. I find it very slow. It used to take over an hour to scan my PC which had roughly 160,000 files. I then found a better package in Trend PC-Cillin, and now the complete scan takes 35 minutes. I also like F-Secure and Sophos.

Now I'm on XP, NAV takes about the same time.  Not sure exactly how many files (I'll check next time I do  system scan) but the same software used to take less than 30 mins when I was using Win98.

I'm running NAV2005 on my newish laptop and it takes about 30-35 minutes to scan about 130000 files.

I too noticed that my Ad-Aware anti spam was looking at over 70,000 objects despite my computer being brand new but it only took a few minutes to do it. My IT adviser says it is quite usual for this many objects to be scanned more or less straight away. After three months there are still about the same number of objects being scanned and it takes just over two minutes. Ad-Aware SE Personal is a free download and finds more than others I have tried.
