can't burn with nero 6

i have installed nero 6 and all the updates for xp.when i try to burn a disc it wants to create / save an image first which i do then it says burning process complete, but nothing is burnt as it dosn't even use the writer .when  it completes this it is all over with no other option. i used nero 6 before reformating and never had to save an image and now i can't get around this.what am i doing wrong.

sorry guys nero had not picked up my writer so it set it as a virtual drive.it selected my  writer and away i went.DOH!
