Is there a way of preventing access to chatrooms.

Jedda, there is absolutely no way you can prevent access to chat rooms.  The only way to avoid is to just not go into them.  If it's your kids you're worried about you can usually set the options so that it is under 18's that is in there.  If you think your partner is spending too much time on chat sites then you can't block them from the PC but you should probably talk about it with him/her

Yes, Block the outgoing port number on your router or block the Outgoing IP Address of the initial server on the router. Or use the ZoneAlarm program to do the same to one PC / Laptop only.

If you dont know what the port number or IP address are, tell me what chatroom you are using and what software you are using to access it and I will tell you what to do.

If you havent got a router, GET ONE !!!

It is actually my neighbour that want's to get on the net to allow his young teens to help with schoolwork, it sounds like it would be dificult unless he watches them all the time.
