I suddenly cannot open any programs on my laptop. Can't open System Restore. All the programs on my desktop are showing blank. I have Windows 7.
Can't run anything. Tried regedit but nothing happened.
Can anyone help me as it is driving me nuts.
Thanks in advance.

Tried downloading Malawarebytes but when I try to open it I keep getting the message Class Not Registered, getting this same message when I try to open anything I have downloaded.
Let's start with the simplest suggestion:

If you're using a mains adapter, unplug it. Then turn your laptop upside down and remove the battery. (It simply slides out when you release the catch). Wait a minute or two then replace the battery (and mains adapter, if appropriate) and try booting your laptop up. There's at least a 50% chance that it will magically work again!

That has made no difference.
OK, next suggestion:
Have you got the disc that (hopefully) came with your laptop? If so, put it into your laptop's disc drive and restart it. Hopefully the BIOS will be set to giving priority to the disc drive (rather than the hard drive) upon booting. (If not you'll need to boot again, pressing the relevant key to get into the BIOS settings, which will hopefully appear on screen at the start of the boot-up process).

If your laptop can boot from the disc you'll hopefully find an option that will help you. Exactly how that might appear will depend upon whether it's a standard Microsoft Windows 7 disc or a recovery disc created by your laptop's manufacturer. However you're looking for something like 'Repair Windows'.

If you've not got a disc, or the above doesn't help anyway, it might be useful to know the make & model of your laptop.

[Just another last minute thought, which perhaps I should have suggested first: Have you tried booting into Windows Safe Mode? It's usually achieved by pressing F8 during the start-up process but some machine might be different].

When I right click on any of the programs on the task bar it says Open With Free File Viewer, has this anything to do with the problems I am having.
Tried clicking on Default Programs to change this but nothing is happening.
Is there any other way to change what the programs open with.
Free File Viewer is, at the very least, a PUP ('potentially unwanted program') but there are suggestions across various websites that it contains malware (which might have corrupted your laptop's registry).

Try downloading and running TDSSKiller. (It's 100% safe as it's from Kaspersky). If you can't download it onto the troubled machine, try downloading it on another computer and transferring it via a USB stick:

Or, possibly first, try opening a command prompt in administrator mode:

and then running CheckDisk from there:

(Scroll down to 'Using CheckDisk from the Command Line')
