I think all regions play on computers. It's when you play them in a DVD player that you can have a problem

I want to buy a DVD, "Dear America: Letters home from Vietnam" but I can't find a copy on sale anywhere that is Region 2. Its quite expensive and I don't want to order one from the States and find its useless. I have tried YouTube but without luck.
whats the make and model of the dvd player?

Thanks Dave.
You have 5 chances to change dvd region settings for your dvd drive - then you are stuck with the final one.

As Tuvok says, you can change the DVD region on a computer but only a few times before your computer's DVD drive becomes permanently locked to the last region you entered. Further, you're not offered the option automatically when you insert a DVD from a different region. (You simply get an error message). So you have to go via the Device Manager to do it:

(That's for Windows 8 but it's basically the same for any version of Windows).

I buy quite a few international DVDs and use a multi-region player. If you think it likely you'll be buying other non-European DVDs in future, such a player could be a worthwhile investment:

Thanks everybody
You could try a web search for "can a dvd drive be set to read any region ?"
If you've problems with the Lenovo, get yourself a cheap DVD player.
They tend to play anything up to a brake disc.
^^^ A cheap DVD player purchased in the UK will only play Region 2 DVDs. (There's a legal obligation on the manufacturers to ensure that their products can only play DVDs from the area where they're sold). The only exception is where the player has been hacked to make it 'multi-region', as the one in my link above has.
If you have a spare bay in your desktop you could install another dvd drive and dedicate it to region 1 dvds
