Lost All My Music On My Ipod!

I had about 40GB of songs on my my iPod classic and when I was just syncing it it's erased the whole lot! Help! How did this happen - I know it's to do with the syncing - am I able to get it back somehow? I had dozens of playlists too which I will be so upset to lose...
